God Begins in the Deep
Opening Scripture: “Darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering…” Genesis 1:2
This was not shallow darkness. It was deep chaos—a formless, void abyss. And yet—God did not retreat. He hovered. He engaged. He spoke. And creation began.
The Hebrew word for “deep” is tehôm—the abyss, the surging depths. The problem before God was not surface disorder—it was deep and unfathomable. And that is where God began His work.
And that is the pattern of redemption: Human problem is deep and beyond human words can decribe, which only God understands, that’s why God begins in the deep. Not at the surface. Not at the symptom. But at the very root.
What is the root problem? Self-deification. The lie of Eden: ”You will be like God.”
Pride, perhaps, is the first recorded sin in Scripture—Lucifer wanting to be like God, and Adam following suit. His desire to be like God preceded the act of eating the forbidden fruit—it was the driving force. When you look at the world around you, do you not see the same spirit at work?
Pride is subtle. It has invisible boundaries.
When a person steals, he knows he has crossed a line. When someone lies, she is conscious of the falsehood. In both cases, the boundary is visible—and the conscience reacts.
But pride is different. It does not announce itself. It does not feel like sin. It often masquerades as strength, confidence, or even conviction.
That is why pride is deadly. It creeps in quietly. Unnoticed very often. It hides behind good intentions. It thrives in the absence of self-awareness.
You cannot clearly mark when humility ends and pride begins. It is not a moment—it is a posture. And that posture resists guidance, rejects submission, and refuses to agree with God.
Scripture asks, ”Can two walk together unless they have agreed?” We cannot dictate our path and expect God’s blessing. He will not agree with us until we first agree with Him.
Pride replaces God in the throne of the heart. That is why God opposes it. When we resist Him, we meet resistance from Him.
Don’t be afraid of the deep places in life. The Spirit is already there, gently hovering over you.
That’s why the Holy Spirit has been given to you—He is your Helper. And when you ask God, “Please help me,” that is your first step into humility. It’s in that place of surrender that His strength, guidance, and peace begin to shape your life.
Pride is deadly. It creeps in quietly. Unnoticed very often. It hides behind good intentions.

Prayer:
Lord, help me to embrace the cracks in my life as places where Your light can shine through. Let me not chase success that fades, but pursue the purpose that endures.
Make me a vessel of Your grace, humble and whole in You.
Amen.
